The Alberta Research and Innovation Authority is an integral
part of Alberta Innovates - a strategically aligned and integrated
provincial research and innovation system. Under the banner
of Alberta Innovates, we work with key innovation support agencies,
with publicly funded post-secondary institutions, industry and
government to further research and innovation in the province and
make Alberta more competitive in the global economy.
The Authority provides strategic advice and recommendations to
the Government of Alberta through the Minister of Advanced
Education and Technology on how leading edge research,
emerging technologies and competitive advantages can be utilized to
diversify and power Alberta's future.
This Authority will monitor the performance and
outcomes of research and innovation through suitable measures, and
will regularly report to the government on issues that include but
are not restricted to:
• Identifying leading-edge research areas and innovation
policies that will support the diversification of Alberta's
economy, from an economic and social well being perspective, and
leading to the development of knowledge-based industry sectors in
• Providing the Minister with regular reviews and reports on
the performance of the research and innovation system and advising
on improvements that will increase Alberta's competitiveness.
• Exploring and gathering information on best practices in
other jurisdictions and utilizing benchmarking strategies to assess
the status and progress of Alberta's research and innovation
• Engaging in generative thinking and conduct futures studies
and market based scans through engagement of appropriate agencies
using such means as surveys, roundtable discussions and stakeholder
